Dr. Sophie's Surrey and Langley dental teams understand that for some people visiting the dentist can be very stressful. If you suffer from dental anxiety or heightened oral sensitivity, oral conscious sedation may be able to help you get the treatment you need in a relaxed and stress-free manner.
At Dr. Sophie's dental practices in Surrey and Langley, our team of dental professionals strive to make every patient feel relaxed and comfortable, regardless of why they are visiting our dental clinics. For our patients who suffer from dental anxiety, or heightened oral sensitivity, oral conscious sedation can be helpful in making their time with us more comfortable and relaxed, allowing them to receive the treatment they need, then leave our office feeling that they have had a positive dental healthcare experience.
What is oral conscious sedation?
If you find dental appointments particularly stressful, or uncomfortable, our Langley and Surrey dentists may be able to prescribe oral conscious sedation to help you relax. These medications are available in pill or liquid form and can be used the night before the dental appointment to help you sleep, and/or an hour before the appointment begins to help you feel calm and relaxed from the moment you arrive at our dental clinic.
Oral conscious sedation gives a feeling of calm relaxation which lasts long enough to help you get through most dental procedures with minimal stress, and leave our office feeling good about your dental treatment.
What will oral conscious sedation feel like?
Not long after taking the sedation medication you will begin to feel more relaxed and calm. This relaxed feeling will last throughout your dental appointment. During your treatment you will remain calm and awake. These medications can be so effective at calming people that some patients actually nap through their dental treatment!
Although oral conscious sedation is considered safe for most healthy patients, our dentists recognize that every patient's needs are different. That's why our dentists decide how oral conscious sedation will be used on a case-by-case basis. Speak to your Surrey or Langley dentist if you think dental sedation could help you to cope with your dental anxiety or heightened oral sensitivity.
Your dentist will require a full medical history prior to your treatment to determine whether dental sedation is appropriate for you, and avoid any drug interactions.
If you are scheduled to undergo treatment with oral conscious sedation, be sure to arrange for someone to take you home following your treatment. You will not be able to drive after your sedation appointment.
